Specifically, the U.S. warns that factions' refusal to surrender weapons could push the Iraq into civil war.

Former Pentagon official David Des Roches, on Monday, considered the government's appointment of a Iraq until September to surrender factional weapons a "positive step", noting that factional refusal to surrender weapons could push Iraq into civil war.

Des Roches, who has held several high-profile positions, most notably as NATO's Director of Operations, told Twilight News Agency, "Setting this deadline is a positive step, but as always, there will be resistance to the sovereignty of the Iraq state from those who receive orders from Iran and not Iraq, and this resistance can be deadly".

He added that "the central question now is whether the Iraq state is really prepared to face and kill Iranian agents in its midst, or whether it will end up with a settlement and concessions that represent a new resolution and legislation for the unacceptable current situation".

Des Roches pointed out that "the bottom line is that Iraq is not a fully sovereign state, and it doesn't seem ready to face its internal enemies to reach that sovereignty, so it continues to falter with an Iranian covered in a transparent banner".

He also stressed that "although this situation may be politically acceptable in Baghdad, it will not be enough to lift international restrictions on bank transfers and other means of circumvention used by Tehran to escape US and international sanctions, especially as the Iranian economy continues to deteriorate".

Regarding the expected scenarios in the event of a factional uprising, Des Roches explained that "if armed groups refuse to surrender their weapons, the Iraq will either continue as a sovereign-split state, or face a phase of civil war against Iranian agents as there is no third option already".
