Dhi Qar Council: Investigations into corruption file in Nazareth Municipality revealed widespread corruption networks

Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The Chairman of the Committee on Integrity of the Dhi Qar Governorate Council, Abdulbakki Omri, revealed on Monday, 10 August 2026, that current investigations into the corruption file within Nazareth Municipality have begun to expose threads of widespread corruption networks, including parties and people with official seals and signatures.

Omar said that "the file of Nasiriya Municipality is one of the most prominent corruption files in the province", noting that "previous proceedings against it have not reached its full stages, due to what he described as pressure and political interference".

He added that "current investigations have begun to uncover threads of widespread corruption networks, including entities and people with official seals and signatures", describing the situation as involving "municipalities within a municipality and governments within a government".

He added that "the number of names currently registered is 28 names, while there may be other undisclosed arrest orders to preserve the confidentiality of the investigations", noting that "determining the final numbers and names rests with the judiciary and the investigating officers", noting that "investigations may lead to the disclosure of new names and larger characters", stressing that "the land distribution file comes at the front of the files being investigated".

He pointed out that "more than 40,000 parcels of land have been distributed, amid suspicions about the validity of the procedures and their completion, as well as the existence of fake numbers of parcels of land and sales or assignments to special sites, which were supposed to be auctioned to maximize state resources".
