Erbil (Kurdistan24) - The Iraq media and communications authority warned of the possibility of shutting down and suspending the work of Cork Telecom, while the company responded by describing the decision as involving "political goals and motives", amid widespread popular and economic warnings of freezing hundreds of thousands of bank accounts and halting daily transactions for citizens.

Economic circles and risk stakeholders discussed repeated threats to shut down one of the largest telecommunications companies in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, stressing that the direct negative impact lies on citizens and markets.

For its part, Cork Telecom revealed that the Communications Authority's actions are driven by political parties and agendas, and aimed at harming the telecom sector and citizens.

In a Kurdistan 24 poll, citizens expressed their deep concerns about the implementation of the decision; one said: "The first victim of this decision is the average citizen; because hundreds of thousands of bank accounts, e-wallets and smart services are linked to Cork phone numbers.

Citizens have urged regulators to halt these actions and avoid the service sector entering into disagreements, noting that the Cork segment is still in high demand in the markets.
