Suspension of the return of secretly displaced Kanhai to their homeland after the attacks

Erbil (Kurdistan24) - The return of displaced Kurds to their hometown in the Syrian Kurdish city of Sreekan (Ras al-Ain) was suspended on Monday after the first group of returnees were attacked.

Some 2,500 Syrian refugees returned to their homes on Monday, under an agreement signed by the Syrian Democratic Forces earlier this year, with the new authorities who overthrew the previous regime in late 2024, which provides for the gradual integration of the military and civilian institutions established by the Kurds during the years of conflict into Syrian state institutions.

As part of the agreement, a large number of displaced people have also recently returned to the Afrin region after fleeing in 2018 following a Turkish attack.

Over the past few months, several obstacles have hampered the return of displaced people to the border area with Turkey, prompting its residents to call on the authorities to expedite their return.

Later on Monday, Kurdish officials accused "armed groups" of carrying out attacks against returnees.
