Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - Colombian President Abelardo de España announced on Monday, August 10, 2026, that the death toll from the devastating earthquake that hit the west of the country has risen to 111, noting that field operations are ongoing to help those affected.
D'Esperria said in an official speech that the earthquake left 87 people with varying injuries, causing dozens of residential buildings and public facilities to collapse, as emergency teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble.
The magnitude of the quake was 7.4 on the Richter scale, with experts identifying its location in western Chuco province at a depth of a hundred kilometers, and was felt by residents of neighboring countries Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela, prompting authorities in the capital, Bogotá, to evacuate buildings as a precaution.
For his part, Mayor of Pereira, Mauricio Salazar, described the situation in his city as "critical", confirming the record of at least 18 deaths. In Cali, the third largest city in Colombia, Mayor Alejandro Eder reported the collapse of 20 buildings and the blockade of a number of people under the rubble due to "serious damage" to infrastructure.
