The execution of three drug dealers has been contained in their possession of 140 kilograms

Baghdad's Central Criminal Court has issued a death sentence for three convicted drug dealers after seizing 140 kilograms of methamphetamine and caffeine in their possession.

Justice media reported in a statement on Tuesday (11 August 2026) that the Central Criminal Court had issued a death sentence against three drug dealers for the crime of drug trafficking, noting that the convicts were restricted in their possession of the amount.

He explained that the sentence was issued based on the provisions of Article 27 (1) of the Drug and Mental Health Act No. 50 of 2017, and in lieu of Articles 47, 48 and 49 of the IraqI Penal Code.

Section 27 of the Narcotics and Mental Health Act provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment for those who import, import or export narcotics, psychedelics or chemical precursors for the purpose of trafficking, except where permitted by law.

References to Articles 47, 48 and 49 of the Penal Code relate to the provisions of contribution and participation in crime, determining the status of the perpetrator, partner and responsibility for the contribution of more than one person to the criminal act. Published decisions of the Supreme Judicial Council show the use of the three contribution materials combined when assigning responsibility to several defendants in a single crime.

The IraqI drug law, in force since 2017, also provides for the confiscation of transferred and non-transferable funds for the perpetrators of the crimes provided for in articles 27 and 28, the verification of their sources, as well as the confiscation of drugs, tools and means of transport used in the commission of the crime in accordance with the conditions specified in the law.
