160 Brazilian cars are still on the roads of Kurdistan Region

Residents of the Kurdish region, especially the pre-1990s generation, have many memories with the Volkswagen known as the "Brazilian", as it was one of the favorite cars of many citizens, and was only available to those with very good financial ability.

According to one of the leaders of the Brazilian group Erbil, there are currently only about 160 cars of this type left in the region of Kurdistan, 100 of them in Erbil, but they still retain their buyer and lovers, and spare parts are still imported.

How was the Brazilian imported into Iraq?

This car is German made and produced by Volkswagen, but it is known in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as "Brazilian", while it is called in Brazil as "Iraqiano", because it was exported from Brazil to Iraq.

In 1983, Iraq imported this car for the first time, and named it "Brazilian". That year, Iraq signed an agreement with Brazil, under which it was importing military and civilian needs in exchange for exporting oil to it, and importing cars was one of the clauses of the agreement.

Under an agreement with the Brazilian subsidiary of German Volkswagen, Iraq imported about 120,000 cars between 1983 and 1987.
