In Erbil, on Tuesday, the international chess championship competition was launched, with the participation of 62 players from different regions of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, amid official attendance and interest from the game's fans.

A spokesman for Shafaq News Agency said the tournament will run for five days, ending on 15 August, as part of the fourth edition of events organized by the Taj Chess Club and Academy.

"The launch of the fourth edition of the international chess tournament is an achievement that reflects our commitment to the development of the game of chess in the region".

He added that the tournament's importance "is not limited to competition, but it is a platform for the exchange of experience between players from different regions, contributing to raising the technical and professional level and refining promising talents".

Ali pointed out that the academy has ensured that the current version stands out "in terms of the level of organization and the size of participation", expressing his hope that such events will contribute to the promotion of chess as an intellectual and cultural sport that brings together young people in a competitive atmosphere.
