Iraq entered the most fragile economic phase in two decades, after the government officially acknowledged its inability to pay employees' salaries on time, amid calls by political figures, financial and economic experts to pressure Iran to release the constraints of the Strait of Hormuz. About 8 million employees, retirees and beneficiaries of social support rely on government salaries as a major source of income, while the government relies on oil revenues by 90% to insure salaries and various expenses, with salaries accounting for the largest share of related spending.
